The XC70 is based on the V70 estate and borrows two powerplants from its line-up. Choose from the 2.5-litre 210bhp petrol turbo or the 2.4 turbodiesel, which is the better choice for various reasons.
The XC70 is well mannered on the road. Its four-wheel drive system has tamed the V70’s tendency to run wide when pushed through corners, although the steering is vague and the ride seems half a step out of kilter with both the body and the road. Off-road ability is limited to rutted tracks, but it will go places an estate car cannot.
